The day after I went to Tokyo. I started streaming before noon as usual, and immediately tilted my head.

“What is this.”

They’re greeting me, but there’s a lot of stuff that clearly isn’t Japanese. English and such. There’s a lot of other stuff too, but I don’t get it. Master only taught me Japanese.
The number of comments is huge too. It’s just, amazing. The black board is packed with letters, a little hard to read. Not so much I can’t read it, though.

‘Rita-chan, heeey’
‘This got more amazing than expected lol’
‘The viewer count’s a crazy number too lol’

Viewer count. Come to think of it I can see that, right. I never cared so I never paid attention. Um…

“What is this. Fifty thousand…? And it’s still going up…?”

People are increasing at an incredible pace. What is this, scary. Even I can tell fifty thousand is a really big number.

“Why are there so many people today? Is it a holiday or something?” Continue reading

I made a rough check of the workshop; the interior, as if it had been cleaned only a few days ago, seemed fine for ordinary use.
I wanted a small, clean room that could serve as an examination room, but I would think about that in due course.

After that I asked Gerda to draw water, and I went on checking what tools there were, what herbs remained, and so on.
Fortunately the tools were ones I had used, or ones much like them; there seemed to be no problem there.
The herbs, too, were well dried and in good condition.
Someone, I was more and more sure, had been looking after the place diligently.

“How is it, Asha?”
“Ah, Gerda, thank you for your work.
Yes, with this I should be able to start at least the minimum as soon as tomorrow.”

I answered Gerda, who had shown her face after finishing the water-drawing.
Of course there was no stock of herbs that could not be dried, so depending on a patient’s condition I might not be able to respond at once.
But there were plenty of herbs with which I could at least suppress symptoms for now: painkillers, antipyretics, and the like.
…I was made to think, again and again, what a capable person Dia had been.

I would succeed her, and be allowed to use these tools and herbs. I must not shame that.
I renewed my resolve.
That said, full-scale work would begin tomorrow. Continue reading

Even with the knife I have, the ogre’s horn won’t take a nick; in the end I shave it off with a mana round from a handgun.
It’s big, looking again. The horn alone is more than half my height.
Incredibly hard, and it looks like it could be a weapon. Not that I could swing it with my arm strength.
I mean, dragging it all the way back to the capital was about all I could manage.

“So, this is the horn.”
“…You. You pull something every single day, don’t you.”

When I submit it to Glad, he gets a crease between his brows.

“What. You told me to report.”
“I didn’t think it’d be every day, normally.”
“It can’t be helped. I couldn’t just leave it.”

There are villages and towns around the capital too, and that forest is famous for medicinal herbs.
If I’d left it, who knows what would have happened.
…Well, I didn’t really think I could hunt it.
If you try hard, things work out. Yep.

“That’s true, but… well, fine. There weren’t any others?”
“Just this one. And a few goblins.”
“Don’t call a pack of seven ‘a few’…”

The guildmaster covers his forehead and groans. Sorry, I guess. Continue reading

“GROOAR!!”

“Kh…!”

The lesser dragon thrashed, swinging its claws.
Princess Charlotte fled, muddy and battered.

“Flame!”

Still running for her life, she raised her staff.

“Flame! Come forth, flame!!”

The tip of the staff flickered.
There was no sign of magic activating.

“Why? Why can’t I use magic!?”

Unable to cast as she wished, she ducked behind a tree.
Looking at the staff, Princess Charlotte lost her words in shock.

“What… is this…?”

A gem black and cloudy, goldwork warped and ugly.
The once-beautiful staff was ruined beyond recognition.
Lady Ulrika’s words crossed Princess Charlotte’s mind.

“Crude goods… it was true…?”

As she stood dazed, a shock ran through her back.

“GROAN!”

“Kyaa!”

The lesser dragon’s charge snapped the tree she had hidden behind.
It lunged at the fallen princess.
Then—

“Lady Charlotte, look out!”

With the voice, a small shadow dove in.

“Natasha! Why!?”

It was Natasha.
She drew her sword in a smooth motion and stood before the lesser dragon.

“I couldn’t run and leave Lady Charlotte behind!” Continue reading

“There’s this too.”

When I turned at the guide’s voice, he was holding something like a red soup. He set it on the table, and it has a slightly unique smell. I can tell from the smell. This is a spicy one.

“Is spicy okay?”
“Mm. Of course.”

I try it with the spoon he brought along. The lots of whitish stuff, is that tofu? When I put it in my mouth, it’s spicier than I expected. Spicier than curry. But I don’t know, it’s the kind of spice you could get used to.
This goes really well with rice too. Delicious.

“Eheh…”

‘Ahh geez what delivery am I even supposed to get!’
‘Just get all of it?’
‘Gyoza and mapo tofu is rough on an old guy’

Ah, so that’s the name of this dish. Um…

“Mabaa tofu?”
“Maba… nfu…”

Ah, the guide kind of laughed at me. I guess that’s wrong.

‘Mabaa tofu lmao’
‘Well, if you don’t know how to read it and only see the kanji you wouldn’t know lol’
‘Rita-chan, it’s maa-boh-doh-fu’

“Hoh hoh. Maa-boh-doh-fu.”

‘The pronunciation feels a little off, but well, it’s fine!’ Continue reading

“Well then, we’ll be off. Ah, I’ll let our people know.”

After a while of small talk, Nasti left.
For an instant, she glanced toward the workshop.
We waved her off, and once she was out of sight, I let a mutter slip.

“Nasti… was she perhaps keeping watch around this workshop?”
“Hm? Why did you think that?”

Gerda turned a puzzled face on my sudden murmur.
It was not as if I had grounds; it had only been a feeling.

“Just a feeling, but. The way she appeared, it was as if she had waited for the right moment after you and I arrived.”

And besides.
The profile she showed as she left, looking at the workshop, had been lonely, as if she were reluctant to part.

“I wondered if she was trying to protect it from people who might do it harm, or something.”
“That itself is not an impossible story.
Nasti and Granny Dia were quite close.” Continue reading

Today’s lunch was a sandwich.
The kind packed with bacon and leafy greens.
Crisp-fried bacon and the crunch of the greens fit together well, and the mustard was working; it was very good.
Delicious food is justice. That’s the absolute standard in me.
I’m grateful to Liza all over again for recommending this inn.

But when I go to the guild, Liza isn’t there, of all times.
I was going to thank her for the good food, too.
That said, what isn’t there isn’t there, so I pick up the stack of request forms.
Yesterday I only looked at gathering; maybe I’ll look at subjugation too.
I have to earn lodging until the reply to the letter comes.

I flip through the not-very-thick stack.
Mixed in with goblins and orcs there are kobold and wyvern subjugation requests, but nearby it seems like only the standing goblin request.
I’ll memorize the proof parts written on them for now.
I might run into something while I’m killing goblins.
Goblins and kobolds are canines, orcs are the nose, wyverns are the hooked claws. I think I can manage those with the knife I have.

Ah. I kind of wish I’d kept some of the smoked orc I made on the way here, instead of giving it all away.
But I didn’t know you could sell it at the guild… the merchants were happy, so it’s fine.
Hmm. If I see more I’ll hunt them.
Anyway, to the forest, I guess.

Meanwhile, Lady Ulrika and Olivia.
The two of them walked along through the forest.

“Hmm… not a single monster…”

“That’s strange… there should be quite a few living here.”

“It’s an exam, and it’s dull…”

Since the exam started, Lady Ulrika had not defeated a single monster.

In fact, sensing the Demon King’s presence, the monsters were running for their lives.
As a result, not one appeared before her.

Lady Ulrika, of course, had no way of knowing that.
The two kept walking, peering around.
They pushed deeper into the forest with nothing to show for it.

“We’ve come quite far in, but we still haven’t found any monsters.”

“There’s no end to this. It can’t be helped…”

Lady Ulrika’s patience ran out.
She pointed an index finger at the sky.

“Lady Ulrika, what are you doing?”

“I can’t find them no matter how I search, so I’ll find them by force.”

“By force?”

“Here we go… detection magic!” Continue reading

I canceled the vanishing magic a little after leaving the venue, but… wow. The surroundings are amazing. I’d heard about it and thought I understood, but seeing it for real is more than I expected.
Skyscrapers left and right. I thought the trees in the forest I live in were pretty big and tall, but this is exactly what they mean by it being presumptuous even to compare.

“Amazing. Tall. Amazing.”

‘Rita-chan’s vocabulary lmao’
‘She’s just a country bumpkin coming to the city lol’
‘Well, first time you come you get overwhelmed. I get it, I get it’

I can’t believe this many people live in buildings this tall. That said, it also looks a little cramped.

“Is Japan that small a country? Did the population go up or something?”

‘What do you mean?’
‘Ahh… Rita-chan. Most of the buildings here are for work. Most people have their homes somewhere else.’

“Ah, I see.” Continue reading

In other words, I was a substitute for Mother in Father’s eyes.
And for Mother I was the accursed existence that had brought her relationship with Father to an end.
A child shunned by the parents who gave birth to her cannot fail to warp.
I do not intend to push all the responsibility onto them, but that they were involved in some portion of it is not something that can be denied.

“Even so, you’re the one at fault. You killed Ryotaro. You tore me and Ryotaro apart. If only you had never been born, this would never have happened!”

Bound at the limbs on the bed, she flung that at me with a face full of malice.
Even so she denied it, and refused me, Mother.
Words like sludge settled on a riverbed, ugly enough that the former me would have had her heart broken by them.
But I, who had obtained backing that called to mind a boys’ manga—love and strength and courage and companions—could only hear it as bluster.
A show of strength, to cover the agitation of being told of Father’s death and having her lips taken by her daughter.

“…What. What are you laughing at…”
“No. Only that a mother who once looked so large now looks very small.”

Rather than that I have grown, I should say I have been transformed.
An existence that was a threat is now, before me, only one frail woman.
Thinking so, I suddenly found her dearer than before.
In a human body I would have been captive only to hatred; as a Demi-Vamp I can love even a parent like this.
Wanting Mother to understand that wonder as well, I stroked her throat with a fingertip as I spoke.

“With only a little pressure of a nail, I could kill you, Mother.”
“—”

Slide a finger under the thin skin, pierce the flesh, snip an artery.
That is all the simple motion I would need to take Mother’s life.

“But I will not. I have been reborn, and I have become far kinder than I was. Kind enough to cherish even a parent who is trash like you.”
“Re…born?”
“Yes. I became a vampire.”

So saying, I lifted the corner of my mouth with a forefinger and showed her a sharply pointed fang.
Mother, who had no image of vampires except as imaginary monsters, wore a blank face.

“Are you out of your mind?”
“Whether you accept this fact or not is all the same to me, Mother. The result will not change. From now on I will use magical power to charm you. You will forget Father and come to love only me.”
“Th-that’s…”

Impossible—every human in this world decides so.
Even seeing the shadows that bind her own limbs, she will not admit the existence of an unrealistic power.
Only when she experiences it in her own person does she recognize it, and by then it is already too late.
Mother will be no exception, I suppose.
Even while we are in contact like this, my magical power is being poured into her, and her heart is being drawn little by little toward me.

“At first it is only a tiny discomfort. Being touched by me like this—do you feel something, Mother?”

When I stroked Mother’s cheek, she glared at me after a slight pause.

“…Only how disgusting it is.”
“Kuskuskus. Yes. Only. Indeed.”

She truly has not noticed, I suppose.
But the slight time lag in her reply itself indicates a change in her mind.
The Mother who rejected me by reflex is already gone.
My soul, if only a few millimeters of the surface, is already beginning to enter the inside of hers.
I will knead it, stir it, and have her gasping before long.

After that I spent several tens of minutes with my hand still on Mother’s cheek, looking at her from close range.
In the warmth at my fingertips and palm, and in the feel of skin roughened by irregular living, I felt not the slightest nostalgia.
I seem to recall hearing that children held by their mothers when small all remember their early years in that warmth.
As I thought, stories heard from others about growing up without being given affection are not to be relied on.

She had been glaring at me, but as the wordless time continued the force of her hatred waned little by little and burned lower.
What surfaced next was “anxiety.”
Toward me, whose feelings could not be read at all, Mother’s mask of bluster began to peel, and fear gradually showed on her face.
Does magical power truly exist? Is it overthinking, this sense that Ryotaro’s presence is thinning in her heart?
Such thoughts went round and round in her head; a negative spiral stirred feelings of every color and dyed them black.

Still more time passed.
Mother was frightened, her complexion a little drained of color.
I treated such a her with affection: I set cheek against cheek, and dropped kisses that were only a touch, again and again.
At first Mother had frowned at every kiss, but whether she had grown used to it or had come to find it not entirely unwelcome, the feelings that rose were no longer only ones of disgust.
As that sort of closeness was repeated, the color returned to Mother’s cheeks.
Further, passing skin-color, they even took on a faint pink—
In the palm against her skin I could feel, faintly but clearly, the rise in temperature and the blood beginning to circulate more actively.

“I love you, Mother. I love you very much.” Continue reading
