Swords and staves pointed at Lady Ulrika.
She, however, remained at her own pace.

“You’ve got spirit! You’ve got energy! That’s a good thing!!”

Crunch, crunch… crunch, crunch…

“I can’t believe you’re still eating cookies!”

“Insolent girl. She must want a painful lesson!”

The young ladies only grew louder, watching her chew.
Then the girl who had named herself third princess spoke, quietly.

“Everyone, put your weapons away.”

“But, Princess…”

“Ganging up to hurt a child like this would only look pathetic, wouldn’t it?”

At the third princess’s order, the young ladies reluctantly sheathed their weapons.

“Besides, not knowing who I am means you must have lived in some terribly backwater place. Poor country girl. I’ll forgive you. Fufu.”

“The princess is so kind. Still, I wonder what countryside she came from? Pfft.”

“It’s unkind to laugh. Hee hee…”

A pack of monsters in front of me.
Five combat magitech dolls. Even veteran adventurers are said to have a hard time handling that many without a party.

Facing something like that, my body shakes.
I’m scared. I want to run right now. Tears are about to come.
This is not an enemy a mere town girl should be taking on just because she was handed a weapon.
The sheer unreality of it chills me through to the pit of my stomach.
Ahh, I never should have taken that weird request at the Adventurer’s Guild.

Even so.
Behind me, there are still little children.
Kids huddled together, fighting not to cry.
To them, these expressionless monsters lurking in the mansion they snuck into on a test of courage must be a nightmare itself.

I have something I want to protect. People I want to save.
And if this hand holds the power to fight—borrowed or not.

There is no world in which I back down.

Fragments of mirror scattered everywhere catch my reflection.
Long black hair, black eyes. Slight, and short. Even I can see I look unreliable.
That is exactly why I put up a front and smile.

I draw the red-and-white handguns from the holsters at my hips and grip them.
I speak a single word to the ring hanging from a chain at my chest.

“Ring!”
“—Sakura-Drive Ready.”

A familiar, androgynous voice. I answer my reliable partner.

“Ignition!”

A world after the Demon King has fallen.
A certain small town. A girl named Ouka, raised in a church where orphans live.

The heroes of salvation, summoned from another world.
Ouka has the same black hair and black eyes as they do—a heretical look, rare in this world—and yet she has always been a bright, forward-looking girl.

Her days are ordinary and unchanging, but she finds happiness in that ordinary life.
The church children she loves, the townspeople who are kind to her.
And above all, the days she spends with Sister Naria, who has been a parent to her, are irreplaceable.

Then, on her fifteenth birthday, a parcel and a letter arrive.

In the parcel: a pair of red-and-white handguns that should not exist in this world, and a small ring engraved with a mysterious language.

And in the letter, a strange line.

“I hereby return your fate to you.”

To get to the bottom of her own birth, and of the meaning of that strange message, she sets out by coach for the royal capital.

This is the story of one ordinary town girl.
Of daily life, of fighting, of cooking, of adventuring, of being given sweets by the people around her.

And, before long, of fairy-tale heroes and an entire country getting pulled in.

A story of days that will not sit still.

The scene shifts to a terrace on the inner courtyard of Romulus Castle.
Soft sunlight poured in. Lady Ulrika sat at a lavish tea table.
Beside her stood a girl in a maid uniform.

“Nice to meet you! As of today I’ve been assigned as Lady Ulrika’s attendant. My name is Olivia. I’m fourteen this year. I’ll do my very best. Please take care of me!”

Olivia, the new attendant, greeted her at full volume.
A cute girl whose brown eyes and hair suited her well.

“Ulrika Demonica Vanillacross. Zenon’s friend, and also the Demon King. A pleasure!”

“The Demon King… So what His Majesty said was true…”

“Hn? Something the matter?”

“No, it’s nothing. I’ll prepare tea. Please wait a moment.”

Olivia worked quickly.
Soon a steaming teacup and a spread of colorful sweets arrived.

“Ohh! They look delicious!”

“Herb tea and cookies. I hope they’re to your taste…”

“I’ll have some at once!”

Crunch, crunch… crunch, crunch…

“They’re delicious! Olivia… is a bit long. Livi, you’ve got a gift for picking sweets!”

“Thank you! Actually I didn’t pick those cookies. I baked them myself.”

“I don’t understand. Someone explain!”

The nobles were in an uproar.

“School? There’s no way we can let someone this unknown—”

One noble muttered it.
Lady Ulrika caught it at once.

“So it’s no good? That’s a shame… If I can’t go to school, perhaps I’ll destroy this world…”

The nobles’ panic only grew.

“Destroy the world? There’s no way she could!”

“But if it’s the Demon King from the legends, destroying the world would be…”

“The Demon King is a fairy-tale, obviously!”

Tension filled the audience chamber.
Then a huge laugh rang out.

“Ha ha ha! School? The Demon King wants to go to school?”

King Zenon clutched his stomach.
He rose from the throne and walked up to Lady Ulrika, unhurried.

“What? You’re not afraid of me?”

“Afraid? This is interesting. All the more if you’re the real Demon King!”

“Is it! Interesting, is it!!”

“It is! Interesting! Ha ha ha!”

This was the Kingdom of Romulus.
An old kingdom, even by human-world standards, ringed in rich nature.
Shock ran through its capital, the royal capital Romulus.

The earth shook.
The air trembled.
Dark clouds boiled.

A disaster like a cataclysm struck the whole capital.
Romulus Castle, where the king lived, took the worst of it. Walls peeled; windows shattered to dust.
The castle’s audience chamber filled with screams.

“What was that tremor?”

“An earthquake? A volcano? Some kind of natural disaster!?”

“Out of the way! Move! We have to evacuate!”

The screamers were noblemen in lavish clothes.
Paunches wobbling, they shoved to be first out the door.
Then a commanding voice rose from the throne.

“Calm yourselves. First we confirm the situation!”

The speaker was King Zenon of Romulus.
A king in his prime, marked by silver hair.
His solid composure pulled the nobles back to their senses.
As the chamber settled, a young soldier burst in.

“Your Majesty! Emergency!”

“What is it?”

“Hah… hah… in front of the castle… a… a…”

She was the peak of demonkind, and master of this castle.

Her sudden tantrum left the demons at a loss.
The tuxedoed demon at her side tried to soothe her.
Chancellor Zephard, her aide.
