Back in front of Adventurer’s Guild reception.
The same beautiful older girl is standing behind the counter.

“Ou, Liza. Register this miss for me.”
“Certainly. Can you read?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“Then please read this first.”

Uh, let’s see, Adventurer’s Guild regulations?
…Look, I get “refrain from actions that harm the guild,” but.
“Don’t do bad things as much as you can”—what is this.

“That’s because if we write it in detail, nobody reads it…”
“Ah, I see.”
“Keep those two. Then please fill this in.”

She hands me a white tablet a little larger than my palm.
What is this, I think, and letters float up on the board.
Ooh, amazing. Some kind of magic?
Ah, fill it in, right.
Name, sex, age… eh, that’s all?

“Miss, only three fields?”
“Yes, that’s all. Rewards and punishments and so on float up on their own.”

Oh. Super convenient. Then: Ouka, female, 15.
Is this okay… ooooh? Now the letters vanished. Magic is amazing.

“Yes, thank you. The tablet, please.”

I give the board back and am handed a copper-colored plate instead.
Ah, my name’s on it. Hoh hoh.

“That completes registration. I think gathering requests would be a good place to start.”
“Eh, that’s it?”
“That’s it. If you do something bad it’ll show on that plate, so be careful.
See the stacks of request forms there? Right is gathering, left is subjugation.”
“Then these on the right. Let’s see.” Continue reading →

A Secret Talk

“Hmh. Chris is skilled at sewing. Granny Stella’s has been short of needlewomen.”
“Kira can use magic, I see. I shall leave her with Dominas; have her sent where she can be of use.”

The Demon King’s voice as she sorted us one after another passed in one ear and out the other.
In this town, me. Alone.
Those words went round and round in my head.

In modern Japan, there were about two hundred physicians per hundred thousand people.
In highly specialized modern medicine, even that was said to be not enough.
Even at fifty thousand, the calculation called for a hundred.
In other words, I would have to do the work of a hundred people.
There were limits even to how brutal a workplace could be.

Apothecaries were a rare commodity, so few had likely been sent here.
I had been sent because of that church decree, whose timing I still could not call good or bad.
Perhaps more would come in the future, but for now, it was me alone.

Even with the conditions that the severely ill would be handled with healing magic, and that I would be spared demonfolk and monsters, we were still badly short of hands.

“How did it come to this…” Continue reading →

Magic Training: Beginner’s Course

A week since I first went to Earth. Since then, once a day, I’ve been visiting Earth—or rather, Mami’s house. The goal isn’t delicious food. I mean, that’s part of it.

“Hmm… Can you feel it?”
“It’s a little warm?”
“That’s good.”

I’m holding both of Chii-chan’s hands, training her to sense mana.
Mami apparently talked to their mom, and we got permission, more or less. More or less meaning she’s half in doubt, or rather, she seems to think it’s that kind of play.
According to Mami, if you suddenly get told it’s magic, that’s the reaction you get.

Even so, permission is permission. So since then, I’ve been teaching Chii-chan a little at a time.
Well, teaching, but it’s only the training to sense mana.
To use magic, the skill of handling mana is required. And to handle it, you have to become able to sense what mana is like.

In other words, what Chii-chan is doing is the very first training for using magic.
And this training is said to be the first, and the greatest, hurdle. According to the Great Spirit, even among people in our world, only one in ten can sense mana.

‘But one in ten feels like quite a lot’
‘No no. That’s just being able to sense it is one in ten, right. Once it comes to actually using magic, it gets even fewer, doesn’t it?’
‘I see, understood’ Continue reading →

Chapter 7: The Adventurer’s Guild

Clatter clatter, several hours of being shaken in a coach from morning.
At last we arrive in the royal capital, Eucria.

First impression. Huge.
The castle, the streets, the gate. Everything’s huge.
The gate guard is huge too, while we’re at it. I could hang off that arm.
…No, maybe I’m just short.

Anyway, everything I can see is big. How many times my town is this.
A place this amazing must have lots of delicious food too.
I’m looking forward to it already… no. The goal is the Adventurer’s Guild. That’s important.
…Well, a little detour might be all right.

This is where I part with the people from the same coach.
They were all good people. Nobody asked about my black hair. I’d like to travel with them again if I get the chance.

At goodbye, everyone thanks me for the food, pats my head, and the girl gives me baked sweets.
…Look. How old do people think I am.
I’ll have you know I’m fifteen.

As for the leftover orc meat, we talked it over and decided to give it to the merchants.
There’s no way we can eat that much, and better they sell it than it rot.
As thanks, they gave the girl and me candy, and copper coins to everyone else.
…I mean, I don’t mind.
I just feel like I’m not being treated as the same age.

I’m a bit put out, but I pull myself together and go to the gate guard.

“Excuse meee. Which way is the Adventurer’s Guild?”
“The Adventurer’s Guild? Straight down this road and you’ll get there.”
“Oh, I see. Thank you.”
“Ou, you’re a cute one, miss, so be careful.”

A Mission and a Resolution

“Now then. With that, it is settled that all of you will be taken in.
As I said earlier, this country is desperately short of hands, so I must have you work as soon as tomorrow.
I shall assign and sort you, so tell me your origins, your skills, what you did for a living, and so on.”

Just as we had all asked to be taken into the country and things had settled, the Demon King suddenly said that.
The remark left me bewildered; Gerda gave a wry smile; and the aide looked troubled.
After a moment’s hesitation, I raised my hand, a little.

“U-um, Your Majesty, may I ask something?”
“Hm? I do not mind. Speak.”
“Thank you. Then, if I may be so forward…
I understand, of course, why you would wish to confirm our skills and the like… but I had thought this was the sort of thing a responsible official would handle.
I never imagined Your Majesty would do it in person, and I must confess I am rather at a loss.”
“Hmh?
Hmh. I see. That is a fair point, Asha.”

The Demon King nodded, magnanimous, at my frank words.
I thought hm?—and it must have shown on my face, because hers turned somehow amused.
…Was it my imagination, or had Gerda’s wry smile deepened?

“Ku ku. You have a rather quick mind, it seems.
That face of yours is asking, ‘How do you already remember my face and name?'”
“Eeh!? Ah, no, I… I’m sorry. That was rude of me.”
“It is fine, it is fine. It is rather entertaining, if anything.”

I hurriedly bowed my head, and received, as her words promised, a cheerfully given pardon.
That was the thing.
Just now she had been greeted by more than ten of us, and yet the Demon King clearly remembered the face and name of me, who had introduced myself first.
She had said my name as naturally as if we were already acquainted, and that very naturalness had felt off—and it had shown. Continue reading →

Souvenirs

“More importantly, souvenirs.”

What I took out of the vinyl bag was two curry buns, one pack of four mitarashi dango, and two of Mami’s homemade onigiri. She’d arranged it so the Great Spirit and I could split it evenly.

“Here, Spirit-sama.”
“Yes. Thank you.”

I hand the Great Spirit a curry bun and an onigiri. All right, let’s eat right away.
I tear the curry bun bag… This bag is amazing too. Isn’t Japan too amazing?
Pakuri, a bite. Hmm…

“There’s no curry…”

‘Ahh… lol’
‘Rita-chan, with store-bought curry buns the filling is sometimes bunched to one side. If you keep eating it’ll come out’

“Huh.”

If I keep munching along, the curry comes out right away. It’s not the gloopy stuff that sits on curry rice, but this is definitely curry. A little on the sweet side, but spicy, and it goes well with the bread. Delicious.

“Whoever thought of putting curry in bread is a genius, I think.” Continue reading →

Chapter 6: Orc Barbecue

Author: Kurohitsuji

When I get back to the coach, everyone is worried sick.
They fuss over whether I’m hurt; the old woman scolds me for being reckless.
The girl comes clinging, crying.

…I’m really sorry.
I’ll make food again today by way of apology.

“I was surprised, though. Miss, were you an adventurer?”
“No, I’m not. Just a town girl.”
“…Well, there are things one doesn’t want to talk about. I won’t pry.”

The father looks at me with very kind eyes.
That’s not it. It isn’t that I don’t want to talk. I can’t talk, because I don’t understand it myself.

“…Ah, right. Could we stop by the river? I want to butcher the orcs, so if someone could help, please.”

As for how to butcher, I had the butcher show me once.
I remember the steps, and I brought a knife, so that should do.
It’s good meat. If we don’t bleed it properly and break it down, it’ll go bad.

“Ah, then shall I produce water with magic?”
“Wow, that would help a lot. By the way, is there anyone else who can butcher?”
“Ou. I’m an adventurer, more or less. I’ve broken down orcs before.”

The adventurer raises his hand.
Oh, as expected of a veteran.

“Then let’s knock it out. Seven of them will take a fair bit of time, though.”
“We’ve secured food for the road. That’s nothing.
Oi, you lot, help carry as thanks. You didn’t have to dump your goods. That’s a light price, isn’t it?”

He tosses it to the merchants with a bright smile.
Both of them are looking this way with faces full of relief.

“Ah, if that’s all, I’ll help. Miss, thank you, truly.”
“Without this it would have been bad. Let me thank you as well.”
“Uh… you’re welcome.
Ah, driver, please wait a bit before we leave.”
“I heard. It helps us too; I’ll lend a hand.”
“Then shall we all go. I don’t like leaving the coach, either.
Is that all right with you, ma’am?”
“Of course I don’t mind. Thank you for thinking of us.”
“Nnh. Then let’s go.”

The driver leads the horses, and we all walk to where the orc pack was.
Looking again, it’s quite a scene.

“Ah… ma’am, could you wait in the coach with her?”
“Let’s do that. Come, this way.”
“Okay.”

It isn’t a sight I want a small child to see, so I have the two of them wait inside.

Now then. Let’s work.

A Chaotic Audience

I do not think it was because of my conversation with Kira, exactly, but from there on the walk, talk began to flow with Kira and the other girls as well.
In the waiting room we were shown to before the audience, the mood was so peaceable I could not have imagined it when we first arrived on the island, and Gerda watched us with a look of happiness.
Being looked at that way was a little embarrassing.

Then, as we chattered, the appointed time came, and we were led into the audience chamber.
Under Gerda’s instruction, we waited on our knees with our heads bowed.

“His Majesty Shutraum now enters. All present, compose yourselves.”

A cool voice, apparently an aide’s, rang out, and we straightened our posture once more.
All at once, a tense air ran through us.

Gerda had been such a good person.
The Demon King, it seemed, was different from what we had imagined.
But whether that difference was for better or worse, we did not know, and in any case there was no question that this was a power that could crush the likes of us with ease.
It was tantamount to facing a living weapon of slaughter. Telling us not to be nervous was the unreasonable demand.
Gerda noticed how we were, but even she could hardly speak to us in this situation; she could only send us a worried look.
Well. Her kindness showed even in that.

I was thinking so when hard footsteps echoed: click, click.
Something with overwhelming power—enough that even I, who could not use magic, could feel it—entered.

…Impossible. Continue reading →

The Demon King’s Castle

Once she had waited for us to settle, Gerda took up the lead again.
Now and then our eyes met those of people in the town, and we exchanged small, hard-to-name nods.
After we had walked like that for a while, we came out into a somewhat more open place.

“Here. This is the castle of my lord, His Majesty the Demon King Shutraum.”

A small ohh went up as we looked where Gerda pointed.
While Gerda spoke with the gate guards—lizardmen, monster-people like lizards who walked upright on two legs—and saw to the formalities, we stared openly at the Demon King’s castle.
To be honest, it was not very large.
The royal castle of the country I had come from was unquestionably bigger; it might even have been smaller than any royal castle on the continent.
I was probably not the only one making that face. Gerda must have noticed.
When she finished the formalities and came back… she was wearing a proud smile.

“Different from the Demon King’s castle you had imagined, is it not?
This castle of His Majesty’s serves only as a facility for government. That is why it is not built wastefully large.”

At that, I thought, oh?
As for the functions a castle ought to have…

“Um, excuse me.
Does that mean His Majesty does not consider this castle a defensive fortification?”
“Mm. That is correct. …Asha, you are rather sharp.”

Gerda said it with what sounded like admiration.
Well. A girl dressed as obviously rural as I was would not be expected to think that far, so the reaction was only natural.
But in that case.

“…This is only a guess, but.
Because this is an island nation, perhaps His Majesty thinks of the sea as a moat, and the entire island as a defensive fortification?” Continue reading →

There Was No Rule That Said You Can’t Break the Rules!

“And so, I’m home.”

‘What “and so” are we talking about’
‘We’re in the usual forest before we knew it’

After that, I came back to the usual forest. I thought I’d explain directly to their mom, but according to Mami it would get complicated, so don’t, she said. She’ll explain.
To be honest, I’m bad at explaining, so I was grateful.

‘So what happened in the end?’

“Mm. I’m planning to teach only magic that isn’t dangerous. Cleansing magic and so on.”

‘You’re teaching her’
‘A little unexpected’
‘If it’s cleansing magic, it should be fine, right?’

Probably fine. Depending on how you use it you might be able to do bad things too, but that’s the same as tools even a child can touch. If I teach her properly it should be fine. Should.

‘So, Rita-chan. Impressions of your first Japan—or rather, first curry?’

“To put it mildly, the best.”

I never thought I’d get to eat katsu curry. It was so, so good. I really want to eat it again. Just imagining it, I might start drooling.

“I saw something called a television too, and that’s amazing. I don’t get how a thing like such a thin board can make pictures move. Science is amazing.”

‘I don’t know. I’m a little happy’
‘I get it. Makes you smirk’
‘Doya!’
‘Well, we didn’t make it lol’

But it’s true that Earth’s humans made it. I really think it’s amazing. People here definitely couldn’t make it. Science and technology themselves aren’t that developed.

I walk at an easy pace through the forest as it starts to get dark. My destination is the World Tree.
Reaching the World Tree, I immediately called the Great Spirit.

“Spirit-sama, you there? Guess not. Then no souvenirs.” Continue reading →
