The day after Lady Ulrika transferred to the human world.
Under a clear sky, this was the soldiers’ training ground at Romulus Castle.

“Mm. Fine weather!”

“Yes… it is…”

Lady Ulrika, all smiles, and Olivia, tense.
And then…

“Ha ha ha! Fine weather indeed!!”

“Haa… why me…”

King Zenon, booming with laughter, and Holy Knight Govan, sighing deep.
On the wide training ground, only the four of them stood.

“Um… Your Majesty, may I ask a question?”

“What is it, Olivia? Speak.”

“Why is Your Majesty here?”

“I heard Ulrika would be doing a preliminary drill for the exam, so I came to cheer her on as a friend.”

“Ohh! I’m glad, Zenon. As expected of my friend!!”

“It’s only natural. Ha ha ha!”

Lady Ulrika delighted, King Zenon roaring. A cheerful Demon King and king.

“Um… then why is Sir Govan here?”

“I can’t leave His Majesty alone… I’m the escort…” Continue reading

I feel like I had a weird dream. I can’t remember it, though.
Something like a bard’s hero tale. A grand adventure.
…No idea. Anyway, get dressed.

A little earlier than usual.
The sun isn’t up yet. Even the chickens are still asleep, and here I am swinging a pot.
Heave, heave.

If you dry-roast grains like wheat and drive the moisture out, they keep.
But they’re heavy. Relentlessly heavy. I rest between swings.
Trying to do it all at once was a mistake.
Heave, heave.

At the same time I smoke dried sweet potato in my homemade smoker.
This is a lot too. Smoking dried sweet potato makes it keep even longer, and it tastes better.
It’s just incredibly billowy. Smoky, but kind of fun.

I’ve also made pickled vegetables, salt-cured fish, all sorts of things.
With this much, we should be fine for a while. I want to think so.

Morning prep will be hard until they get used to it, whatever else you say, and having things they can eat right away should make it easier on everyone.
I made my own travel share at the same time, so it came out to quite a volume, but…
Well, fine. It’s a pretty spectacular sight. I’m satisfied.

…Ah. I haven’t made this morning’s. Need to add soup. Continue reading

Nothing Good Ever Happened

It was a life in which nothing good had ever happened.

My first life was, I think, privileged—at least in terms of the house I was born into.
I was born into the family of a successful doctor. That much, in itself, was true.

“Your only worth is to bring a husband into this house!”

My father was convinced that a woman could not inherit. He treated me coldly and pressed me to take a physician as a husband.
I was not even allowed to question it. And, inconveniently, I seemed to have inherited my parents’ genes all too well: the effort forced on me, whether I wanted it or not, gave me the grades to pass the entrance exams for medical school.
I could not, however, find anyone who met my father’s standards. I was told not to leave university until I did, and was pushed all the way into a doctoral program.
Between that and my father’s high-handedness in putting me there, the hostility directed at me was fierce.

“This paper of yours—did you actually collect this data?
Results this convenient don’t just happen.”

If anything, that accusation was the one with no logical basis.
In any case, my research was never given a fair evaluation.
Stress piled up as nothing went right, and I wasted away in body and mind—until one day I died in a traffic accident.

To my surprise, I opened my eyes again.
Unfamiliar walls. An unfamiliar ceiling. An unfamiliar town.
I had been reborn in a world different from the one I had died in. Continue reading

I Was Reincarnated Without a Single Cheat, Then Sacrificed to the Demon King—and Thanks to That, My Life’s About to Take a Dramatic Turn!

“It was a life in which nothing good had ever happened.”

Asha: a girl who died young in her previous life, never having found a place to belong, and was reborn in another world.
She hoped her second life would be different. Instead she was worn down by day-to-day survival. The knowledge and values she brought from before her reincarnation were more a hindrance than a help. In the end she was treated as a witch and sent to a remote island as a sacrifice to the Demon King.

If you’re going to kill me, she thought, just get it over with.

That was what she believed.

But the Demon King’s country was nothing like she had imagined. It welcomed her—awkwardly, but warmly. Her knowledge and experience were valued, and Asha found herself working as an apothecary.
The only apothecary in Shutraumburg, a makeshift town where sacrificial girls were allowed to go on living.

With help from all sorts of people, Asha put that knowledge to use.
The first thing she produced with it was “sodium chloride.” In other words: table salt.
The inventions that followed shook the island. Each time, she won more trust, until at last they were calling her a goddess.

“How did it come to this!?”

No one heeds her wail. If anything, they look at her as if to say, what are you talking about at this late hour?
And so the story keeps moving with her at its center, leaving only her feelings behind.

Rated R-15—in the sense that it’s even more fun if you remember what you learned in junior high!
Her weapons, with not a single cheat among them: wits, the bonds she forms, and spirit!
A comedy-tinged otherworld fantasy begins here!

The Study at Midnight

Late at night.
The hour even vampires have gone to sleep.
A small light burned in King Zenon’s study in Romulus Castle.

King Zenon sat on a lavish sofa, knocking back drink.
On the sofa across from him sat a slim man, a little older than the king.

“The Demon King’s arrival… I was surprised when I heard.”

The man tipped a glass of ice with a clink.
Rudolf, one of the ministers who held up the Kingdom of Romulus.

“And then enrolling that Demon King in the academy… I truly wonder what Your Majesty is thinking…”

“Sorry. I didn’t consult you.”

“I’m not attacking you. I’m worried.”

Rudolf’s manner was far too blunt for a king.
That tone and bearing were also a measure of how much they trusted each other.

“But a Demon King… is she the real thing?”

“Who knows. There’s no way to confirm it. However…”

King Zenon drained his glass in one go, ice clinking.

“I think she’s real.” Continue reading

‘Rita-chan must have had a time like that too’
‘Master must have raised you thinking the same thing’

“Ah, yeah. Master used to do peek-a-boo at me a lot. He made a weird face, and I didn’t really get it.”
“Eh. Rita-chan, you remember when you were little?”
“Mm. I remember.”

I remember not just from after I was taken in, but up until I was abandoned too.
One reason I can live as a witch is this memory. For a mage, memory is a talent on the same level as handling mana—maybe even more important.

‘The memory is one thing, but Master’s story is what’s surprising lol’
‘Peek-a-boo lmao’
‘That person did stuff like that, huh lol’

He was pretty deredere, I guess. He apparently hadn’t even considered that I’d remember, though.
When I told him that story, his cheek twitched in a really funny way.

“Well then. I’ll go wash the dishes, so Rita-chan, you take it easy.”

With that, Mami stood up.

“Mm? If that’s it, I’ll do it.”
“Eh. Ah, no. That’s really…”
“It’ll be done right away.”

I’ll use cleansing magic, so it’s not a problem. I got treated to katsu curry, even got ice cream, and on top of that going home without doing anything would be wrong, I think.
I take my staff and use cleansing magic. The dishes on the table are wrapped in light for an instant, and become as clean as new.

“Wah… Amazing. Thank you.”
“Mm. Thank you too.”
“I’ll just go put them away, then.” Continue reading

Chapter 3: The Red-and-White Handguns

What I’ve figured out so far: apparently no one but me can hear Ring’s voice.
I tried hanging it from a chain around my neck, and at breakfast and during laundry, nobody reacted to it at all.

Is this thing really not a ghost. It’s pretty suspicious.
Well, for now, I should probably leave that part out when I explain to Sister Naria.

“So anyway, there was a ring and two handguns in it.”
“…I’m sorry, I don’t understand.”
“Yeah, I don’t either.
And apparently there’s someone at the Adventurer’s Guild in the capital who might know what’s going on.”

According to Ring, the sender, Glad, is there.
I’d like to ask for the details, but it isn’t a distance you just pop over.

“Ah, the sender.”
“I’d like to hear the story from that person, but it’s the capital. So I’m stuck on what to do.”
“…Hmm. What did the letter say?”
“‘I hereby return your fate to you,’ I think.”
“…Fate, is it.”

She looks like she has no idea.
Well, of course. I don’t either.

“Hmm. All right—why not go?”
“Eh. To the capital?”
“Yes. You might learn something about your parents.”
“Hmm. I don’t really care about that, though.”

Frankly, I have no interest in the people who abandoned me.
Besides, my mother is Sister Naria.
The person who raised a heretic with black hair and black eyes this far. My benefactor.
I’ll never say that out loud. Too embarrassing.

“I mean, the capital’s like a week round trip? You’ll be in trouble if I’m not here, right?”
“We’ll manage among ourselves for a while. And it’s a chance for the other children to learn to do more.”
“Unnyu. I see…”

I’m glad she’s saying that. But. Hmm.
Those who-knows-what ring and handguns are my fate, huh.
Sounds like nonsense to me.

“And, Ouka. You said ‘handguns’ just now, didn’t you?”
“Eh, yeah. I did.”

“Ouka. What is a handgun?”

Eh, what is… wait?

What is a handgun?
I don’t know any such thing.

“Eh, wait? Why…”

Why do I know the name of something I’ve never seen? Continue reading

What was that.
The ring glowed, and then it talked.

“Eh, what, a ghost?”

I would really rather not have ghosts in the church.
Ugh, my heart is hammering.

“…What even was that, seriously.”
“—Confirm. By ‘what,’ do you mean me?”
“It talked agaaaaain!?”

I scramble back.
Window behind me. Worst case, I go out that way.
Then around to the front and get the little ones out. Yeah. That’s the plan.

Ah, have Sister Naria exorcise it, or…
No, ghosts are probably too much even for her?

“—I am not a ghost: I am an interface for interpersonal communication.”
“…Ha? What?”
“—I am an interface for interpersonal communication.”
“Interpersonal commu… uh, so you’re not a ghost?”
“—Negative: I am an interface for interpersonal communication.”
“You’re not a ghost, then?”
“—Affirmative: I am an interperson—”
“No, that’s enough of that.”

An interface for interpersonal communication, huh.
You’ve said it enough times. I remember.

Anyway, I don’t really get what it’s saying, but… we can talk, apparently.
Also, apparently not a ghost.

“…Uh. Do you do bad things?”
“—Negative.”
“Are you on my side?”
“—Affirmative.”
“…Got it. Then I’ll hear the rest later. Can you wait?”
“—Affirmative.”
“All right… hup!”

I pick the ring up, gingerly. No problem.
It isn’t glowing anymore. Just an ordinary ring.
…Looking closer, what’s this even made of?
If it’s silver, maybe it would sell for a lot.

I set it on the parcel for now. No change. Hmm.
Well, for the moment it doesn’t seem to be a bad one.
I can’t imagine a ring could do much mischief anyway. First things first: do what I have to do. Continue reading

Chapter 1: The Usual Morning

Author: Kurohitsuji
Raw: https://ncode.syosetu.com/n2086fk/2/

My day starts before dawn.

I get out of bed, change into my usual plain white blouse and faded brown shorts, and head for the washbasin.
I wash my face, brush my teeth, and check that there’s no bed-head in the bangs trimmed above my black eyes, or in the long black hair I wear down my back.

That’s me, ready.

Same as always, I head for the kitchen and make breakfast for twenty.
Today it’s red-bean soup and black bread.
Plain, but the soup shouldn’t taste bad.
I simmered in the vegetable scraps I was given yesterday, so even with not much in it, you get a lot of flavors.
I taste it just in case. Yep. Pretty good today too.

∞∞∞∞

On the way to the dining hall with the pot, the little ones start getting up.

“Morning. Go wash your faces, hurry up.”
“Okaaay!”

They answer in chorus and clatter off.
Energetic first thing in the morning—can’t ask for more.
All right. I brace myself and totter along with the heavy pot.

I’m setting the soup pot on the hall table and laying out dishes when Sister Naria comes out of the chapel.
I pause and greet her with a smile.

“Good morning, Ouka.”
“Morning, Sister Naria.”

Against the pitch-black habit, the silver hair spilling from her hood catches the sun and sparkles.
She’s beautiful today too. I don’t know why, but it makes me a little happy.

“It smells good again. You’re a lifesaver, every day.”
“You say that every day.”
“Hee hee. I suppose I do. You, on the other hand, still won’t call me Mother.”
“Guh… Ah, look, breakfast’s ready.”
“Ufufu. Yes, yes.”

Once everyone is there, we put our hands together and say “Itadakimasu” in unison.
Apparently they don’t do this elsewhere, but this church has always done it before meals.
It means we receive life, I’m told.
I don’t know who started it, but it feels kind of nice, and it looks well-mannered, so everyone copies it.

Today, too: Itadakimasu. Continue reading

“Listening to you, what a rude creature!”

“An insult to the princess will not be tolerated! Prepare yourself!!”

Swords and staves pointed at Lady Ulrika.
She, however, remained at her own pace.

“You’ve got spirit! You’ve got energy! That’s a good thing!!”

Crunch, crunch… crunch, crunch…

“I can’t believe you’re still eating cookies!”

“Insolent girl. She must want a painful lesson!”

The young ladies only grew louder, watching her chew.
Then the girl who had named herself third princess spoke, quietly.

“Everyone, put your weapons away.”

“But, Princess…”

“Ganging up to hurt a child like this would only look pathetic, wouldn’t it?”

At the third princess’s order, the young ladies reluctantly sheathed their weapons.

“Besides, not knowing who I am means you must have lived in some terribly backwater place. Poor country girl. I’ll forgive you. Fufu.”

“The princess is so kind. Still, I wonder what countryside she came from? Pfft.”

“It’s unkind to laugh. Hee hee…”

They laughed at Lady Ulrika. She kept eating cookies.
Crunch, crunch… crunch, crunch… Continue reading
