Early morning, Romulus Castle.
Three men had gathered in the king’s study.

One was the king of the Kingdom of Romulus, King Zenon.
Another was Minister Rudolf.
And the last was the academy’s highest authority, Headmaster Neumann.

The men around the table wore grave expressions.

“Rudolf. There is no mistake in the contents of the report?”

“None. I confirmed it myself as well. The woman found as a corpse had bite marks left on her neck.”

Several papers were scattered across the table.
Rudolf read from one of them.

“The victim’s name is Rosetta, a teacher at Romulus Academy. Last night she was out drinking late with friends, then walked home alone. The last to see her was a woman friend. This morning she was discovered with the blood drained from her whole body.”

“…A vampire… then…”

The study went dead quiet.

“Yes… there is little doubt it was a vampire’s work.”

“Damn it. Of all places, to appear in the royal capital…”

“They are enemies of humankind, you see. One of the beings said to be the most evil.”

“It reminds me of a few years ago… the large-scale battle with vampires. The damage then was terrible.”

“The strife between humans and vampires is a long one. Incompatible beings, I suppose.”

A heavy air flowed through the study. Continue reading →

Chapter 28: A Festival

When I wake, the city is noisy even though it’s still early morning.
And I can hear people’s cheers.
What is it. A festival or something.
I go down to the first floor; there are fewer customers than usual, but the mistress is smiling, in a good mood.

“Ma’am, morniiing.”
“Oh, good morning.”
“Did something happen?”
“Well, you see, a Hero who’d been missing for two years has apparently returned.”

Oto. Maybe this is that?

“Would that be Katsuragi Arei?”
“That’s the one! The Heroes went missing right after they beat the Demon King, came back once, then went right out traveling again.”

…That’s just running from Kanon, isn’t it.
I don’t know, that person is scary. Only a hunch, though.
But I see. If they’re back, they’re at the castle, maybe.

“And the knight-captain has returned too, apparently. The whole capital is in a festival mood.”
“…The knight-captain?”

Come to think of it I hadn’t met them; they weren’t in the capital.
From how the talk’s going, maybe Kodama Renju, who I searched for the other day.
No, more than that. A festival mood? Continue reading →

Snack Toss After a While

I wake up. I leave the house, yawn, and start the stream.

“I’m out of sweets. Please.”

‘Morning’
‘At least say hello lol’
‘Sweets, huh, leave it to me!’

A reply like striking iron and getting a ring. A big help. Breakfast is happening.
When I wait a little, lots of sweets start lining up in front of me. Today there are more snack types than Japanese sweets. I like these too because they’re delicious.

‘Wait wait what’s happening!?’
‘Is this that rumored snack toss?’
‘How do you do it? I want to too’
‘Come to think of it ever since that incident new people have exploded’
‘About time to put the magic circle out again?’

“Mm… Yeah. I’ll do that.”

I actually don’t know much about how they watch my stream on that side. Just, the magic circle for snack toss is, they take what I showed, kyapucha? Something like that. Then they print it, or so I hear.
By the way, the one who taught the viewers how to print was Master, not me. I don’t get it, so when they don’t get it I want them to talk it out over there.
I take my staff and display a magic circle at the tip. I point it at the sphere of light.

“Somehow get this magic circle onto paper. Handwriting is probably impossible, so do that printing thing properly. Then when I send mana through the magic circle, the sweets on top of the circle are collected.” Continue reading →

The tool I had brought out was almost the same shape as the tub just now.
I set it up the same way, taking a ground and so on.
But there was one difference… it could be partitioned down the middle.
And first, with the partition plate down, on one side tap water and a very little sodium chloride.
On the other, tap water and the remaining sodium chloride, to make a saturated solution.

“Come to think of it, I was wondering… why does only this one have a partition?”
“As expected of you, Nora, to notice that!
The truth is, what I want to make is different, and this one needs this.”

Ah, no good, I was getting worked up too. My voice was getting loud on its own.
But but, to think we could make this—of course I’d get worked up.

“And, Gerda. Please imbue this with lightning magic!”
“A-ah, understood.” Continue reading →

A Shadow Stirring in the Capital Night

The night of the royal capital Romulus is dark.
Moonlight and the faint glow of streetlamps light the town.

On a dim, hazy night road, there was a young woman.

“Haa… I’ve gotten late… nfufu…”

A hint of liquor hung about her. She walked with unsteady, uncertain steps.
Now and then she grinned for no reason. She was drunk, most likely.

“Nngh… I hate how dark it is around here~… I’ll trip~”

The road she walked was the avenue facing Romulus Academy.
On the quiet street, only the click of her shoes sounded.

“You there…”

A low man’s voice, faintly heard.
The sudden voice startled the woman; she stopped.

“Eh…?”

“You there, miss… a moment, if you would?”

The man’s voice came from the dark of a building’s shadow.

“Walking alone this late at night, you might meet with something dangerous…” Continue reading →

◆ Viewpoint: Katsuragi Arei ◆

The air shakes with a dragon’s roaring.
One cry, and the mana in the atmosphere runs wild.
I throw an arm up to shield my face, but the wind pressure pushes my body back a little.

He takes that opening and spreads his wings. Bad. He’ll escape into the sky.

“Renju!”
“Here we gooo!!”

Renju bursts from cover, long, soft black hair streaming, and in an instant shears off the dragon’s right wing.
It loses its balance and goes down where it is.
A terrific sand cloud rises with the rumble of the earth.

An opening.

“Wake up, God-Forged Iron Stake!”

My partner manifests on my right arm, wrapped in blue mana-light.
A silver gauntlet. A giant iron stake linked to a revolver jutting from elbow to the back of the hand.
Thrust ports lined from the shoulder across the back.

God-Forged Iron Stake.
The most inconvenient blessing the goddess ever sent.

“Let’s go…!”

I blast the verniers on my back and leap into the air.
Full speed, wide open, nothing held back.

The scenery blows away behind me at a terrible force, hard to even see.
The dragon, building-huge, closes at a rush.

——”Load”

The dragon opens its mouth and starts sucking in air. A precursor to breath. Bad.
I kick the boosters and bounce straight up at a right angle.
Immediately after, flame fills everything below.
If that hit, there wouldn’t be a scrap left.

But. Continue reading →

“Mm. The name is Kouta. I don’t know the kanji or the family name. The time he died is between when the plan for Kokoro-zakura Island was announced and when development started. About that much.”
“I see. Understood, I’ll have them look into it.”
“Please.”

I don’t know how far they can look, but they should be able to look further than I can.
Now then. For me, this is more the main topic, maybe.

“So, Hashimoto, what do you want from me?”

I don’t think they’d do it for free. I’ve heard Japan has a huge population, and I understand searching from that is a really hard job.
So considering the price, even if there’s some unreasonable demand…

“Let’s see. Nothing in particular, I suppose.”
“Eh.” Continue reading →

And Then, What We Make

Now then, it having come to this, I would have to move various things forward.
Which was what I wanted, in a way.

“Then, first, I’d like to ask Gerda… ah, Nora, could you help as well?
I want this cask of seawater poured into this tub, straining it through this strainer.”
“Ah, a trifle.”
“I just hold this, do I?”

…No, I don’t think it’s a trifle at all?
But Gerda lifted the cask, thirty liters, that is, over thirty kilograms, as if it were nothing.
Oh no, cool…

No, this is not the time to go kyun.

We set the tub, and Nora held the strainer.
Gerda poured the seawater into it, doba doba.
Quite a force and pressure, surely, and Nora held it with a cool face.
Oh no, cool…

So this is not the time to go kyun. Continue reading →

The Grand Dukes of the Demon Realm

This was the Demon King Castle.
A vast castle standing at the heart of the Demon Realm.
In the audience chamber without Lady Ulrika, mighty mana had gathered.

“Thank you all for assembling.”

Chancellor Zephard of the Demon Realm bowed politely.
Before him, five demons stood in a line.

Six demons, including Zephard.
They were the Grand Dukes of the Demon Realm, under Lady Ulrika’s direct command.

Chancellor, Zephard van Steincross.
Silver Star, Emilio Astercross.
Flame Emperor, Mia Ragnacross.
Black Dragon, Dralg Draniacross.
Fiend, Jubei Yatsuse.
Hundred Beasts, Vermilia Animacross.

Each of them was a mighty demon of a class that would not be strange if they called themselves Demon King.

“Today is a matter of great—”

“Grrr…”

A low growl cut Zephard off.
The speaker was a huge jet-black dragon: Black Dragon Dralg. Continue reading →

Chapter 26: Looking for Someone

Author: Kurohitsuji

Yesterday I went back to the inn dejected, took a bath, and burrowed into bed right away.
And I’m still sleepy.
Hmm. Because I ran wild yesterday, maybe.
I’d like to sleep until noon, but unfortunately I have business today.
I have to go to the royal castle and talk with Katsuragi Kanon.

Unyu… all right! I’ll just wash my face, brush my teeth, and get changed! Continue reading →
